The Kurgan's Kangaroo Court
“Judge not, that you be not judged.”
— Matthew 7:1
In his Substack post “The Virtue of Intolerance,” The Kurgan attempts to paint sedevacantist extremism as heroic truth-telling. But beneath the bravado lies a dangerous contradiction: he claims to uphold canon law—while openly violating it.
Let’s be clear: The Kurgan has no authority to judge who is or isn’t Catholic, and the very law he cites condemns the self-appointed inquisition he’s running online.
1. Private Inquisition, Public Sin
Kurgan offers his readers a checklist to determine who is “really” Catholic: reject Vatican II, denounce all popes since Pius XII, reject the Novus Ordo Mass, and refuse to name the post-1958 popes in the liturgy. Fail one item? You’re a satanic imposter.
This isn’t discernment—it’s lay-led vigilantism. And it directly contradicts the 1917 Code of Canon Law, which he selectively quotes:
-
Canon 1939–1942: Determining guilt of heresy requires a canonical process, not blog posts or public polls.1
-
Canon 2341: No layperson may judge a cleric’s orthodoxy or status without ecclesiastical mandate.2
-
Canon 1385 §1.2–3: Publishing theological books without Church approval is forbidden—yet Kurgan has done so multiple times.3
If The Kurgan truly upheld canon law, he would have no blog, no book, and no pseudo-judicial tribunal.
2. Contradiction: Ignorant or Heretics?
He claims that laypeople who believe the Novus Ordo clergy are Catholics are still Catholic—unless they’ve encountered his “evidence” and don’t convert. Then, they’re either “too stupid” or deliberate deceivers.
So which is it?
This isn’t how the Church defines invincible ignorance. The Magisterium teaches that ignorance can excuse culpability (see Pius IX, Quanto Conficiamur Moerore). Kurgan instead uses it as a threat: agree with me or be damned.
3. Replacing the Church With a Blog
Kurgan insists on fidelity to “infallible Magisterium”—while rejecting the visible Church, her hierarchy, her liturgy, and every pope since 1958.
He has no bishop, no jurisdiction, and no canonical mission. Yet he speaks as if he alone is the doctrinal measuring stick of Catholicism.
That’s not the Church. That’s a self-constructed cult of personality built on denial and judgment.
4. Intolerance Without Authority Is Just Arrogance
Intolerance in defense of truth can be a virtue. But it must be bound to truth, law, and legitimate authority. Kurgan has none of these.
Instead, he’s carved out a private empire built on suspicion and accusation. He calls it “real Catholicism.” But in reality, it’s just another splinter group with no mandate, no mercy, and no Magisterium.
Final Thought
If you truly believe in the 1917 Code of Canon Law, you can’t:
-
Judge souls without jurisdiction
-
Declare clergy invalid without ecclesiastical trial
-
Publish theology without approval
-
Pretend your personal opinions are dogma
You can’t defend the Church by declaring it dead and enthroning yourself in its place.
And that, sadly, is exactly what The Kurgan has done.
