Kurgan - The Holy Spirit comforts......only Catholics??
This is part of Statement 30 of the conclusion of the Vatican II document "Orientalium Ecclesiarium" Decree on the Catholic Churches of the Eastern Rite.
Let them pray also that the strength and the consolation of the Holy Spirit may descend copiously upon all those many Christians of whatsoever church they be who endure suffering and deprivations for their unwavering avowal of the name of Christ.
And what is wrong with this statement? NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
After all, the Holy Spirit is known as the "Paraclete". Going to the websters 1828 dictionary, we have the definition of paraclete:
So, the Holy Spirit is an advocate, supporter, consoler, comforter, and intercessor. Without going through all of these definitions, we can say that the Holy Spirit is a provider of strength and consolation to all Christians in their sufferings and deprivations (loss, bereavement by loss of friends or goods) Just what the statement says.
This is a basic Christian concept and belief, correct? Fundamental, right?? NOT FOR THE KURGAN!
As far as the Kurgan is concerned, this is HERESY!
In his book "Reclaiming the Catholic Church", on page 192 he prefaces this attack on this statement with this:
"In the Conclusion of this document we also find yet another phrase thrown in, that would probably not attract any attention from any Protestant at all, but is a glaring red flag of heresy to a Catholic that actually understands what Catholicism teaches in generic but also absolute terms"
What phrase is that Kurgan? These statements shouldn't attract the attention of ANYONE. Can you get any more basic than GOD COMFORTS AND HELPS PEOPLE? I shouldn't need to do this, but:
BIBLE QUOTES THAT DEMONSTRATE THIS
And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” (Galatians 4:5).
“And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.” (Romans 5:5)
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (John 14:26)"
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever;" (John 14:16)
"But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:" (John 15:26)
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you." (John 16:7)
God is our refuge and strength (Psalms 46:1)
After the quote, the Kurgan says this (pages 192 - 193, bold added the "extra stupid" part):
"Once again, if you believe the Catholic Church is indeed the one true Church, then the Holy Spirit can only descend upon someone that is not Catholic possibly to convert them, but for no other reason really, since they are in effect outside the Church and thus not actually on the side of Christ. It is a principle of dogmatic Catholic faith that outside of the Catholic Church there is no salvation."
So, if you're not Catholic, God doesn't help you because you are not on his side? TOTAL POPPYCOCK!
IMO, Kurgan has confused "dwelling within" that which takes place with Baptism, with "descending upon as a comforter and helper" on all Christians. He has confused being helped with being saved. He does not determine who is outside or inside the Church, and doesn't have enough knowledge to even address this subject intelligently.
And you're going to let this guy lead you out of the true Catholic Church with beliefs like this? Good luck with that.
Read the Vatican II statement one more time:
Let them pray also that the strength and the consolation of the Holy Spirit may descend copiously upon all those many Christians of whatsoever church they be who endure suffering and deprivations for their unwavering avowal of the name of Christ.
This is NOT heresy, this is Catholic and Christian teaching. The Holy Spirit will assist everyone who asks for help, strength, comfort, and His intercession. THANKS BE TO GOD.
Kurgan, once again, like most of his book, is DEAD WRONG.
